Gonorrhea is one of the most common STDs identified in India. According to the report from Apollo hospitals, on a yearly basis, an average of ten million cases is reported in India. It is caused by the bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae that can be cured using necessary medications, if detected in the early stage. However, if undiagnosed and not treated, it can lead to serious health illness. The disease also called the clap or drip and most common among the teens and people in the age of 20s. People who are infected with Gonorrhea do not show any symptoms, in the initial stage. At a later stage, infected persons might notice fluid discharge from vagina or the penis. As the disease progresses, the infection affects the vagina, anus, penis, urethra, throat and also eyes.
Due to no symptoms, people affected with Gonorrhea are not aware of their infection. Hence, there is a possibility of spreading it to another person through vaginal, anal & oral sex. Whenever a person touches the Gonorrhea infected area through vagina, penis, anus, mouth or hands, the infection gets spread. Even touching the Gonorrhea affected eyes of the person can help spreading the disease. Safe sex methods such as condoms or dental dams can help from preventing Gonorrhea. It is also transferred to the baby of the pregnant woman, who is infected by it, only when the baby is delivered through a vaginal delivery. When the baby is delivered through a C-section (Caesarean), the babies may not get affected by it. The life of the bacterium causing Neisseria gonorrhoeae is short shelved. Hence, it is not possible to cause the transfer of infection by touching the clothes of the infected person or using the toilet seats. It is also not possible to spread Gonorrhea through casual contact with the affected person such as touching, hugging, kissing, coughing, sneezing or sharing food.
