The West Bengal School Education department is planning to increase the awareness among the school children regarding the sexual abuse. Hence, the department has proposed to include the “Good touch, Bad touch” concepts into the school syllabus right from Class I. There are also plans of including other key aspects of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 through several interactive activities in order to make the children aware of their rights against such abuses.

Avik Majumdar, Chairman of the Syllabus Restructure Committee in West Bengal addressed the press as, “Since it is rather difficult to make primary schoolchildren understand the POCSO Act as well as ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’ through textbooks, we are planning to come up with interactive ways to make it more lucid”.

It is to be noted that such proposals are introduced after the sexual assault case of a Kindergarten student in a private school of Kolkata was reported. This has triggered a huge outrage among the parents and public of the state. The Chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) has welcomed the new proposal saying, “We are glad that the Education Department is finally going to approve it”.
